Attorney General Sacky Shanghala says stray livestock would soon be forfeited to the State following warnings to their owners to remove stray animals within reasonable time.

Stray animals such as donkeys and wild animals are some of the common causes of accidents on Namibian roads, many of which are fatal, noted Shanghala at a press conference yesterday.

“In order to make Namibia’s roads safe and efficient I call upon the farmers to take responsibility for their animals,” the attorney general appealed to all farmers.

“We will facilitate the crafting of legislation to encapsulate the suggestions made and hand over such to the relevant line ministries to conduct consultative workshops with all relevant public and private stakeholders,” added Shanghala.

He noted Namibia’s road network is one of the most efficient and sustainable systems in Africa making it the envy of many countries.

However, Shanghala is concerned that “the presence of stray domestic animals and wild animals on the roads, in addition to our driving, makes the network less safe”.

Shanghala also stressed that drivers should adhere to safety and precautionary measures when driving to avoid accidents.
