African celebration… Johanna Blockstaan and Bonafatius Engelbrecht were among Namibians, who yesterday celebrated Africa Day at the Sam Nujoma Sports stadium in Windhoek. This year’s theme is “Women’s Empowerment and Development Towards Africa’s Agenda 2063”. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah said gender parity is an important pillar to advance women’s empowerment and natural development. “Together with the shift towards the empowerment of women we are witnessing the growing demand for peace, democracy and good governance in Africa,” she said. Africa Day is the annual commemoration on May 25 of the 1963 founding of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU). On this day, leaders of 30 of the 32 independent African states signed a founding charter in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
