WINDHOEK – Nine Chinese nationals were robbed at gunpoint by unknown suspects at 04:00 in the Dorado Park residential area in the capital on Sunday, said Inspector Slogan Matheus, from the Police Public Relations Department.
Matheus said three suspects broke into the Chinese nationals’ makeshift bedrooms and robbed them of their valuables.
The victims are employed by a Chinese construction company, China Yianyxi, that is constructing residential flats at the International University of Management (IUM) in Dorado Park.
The suspects managed to get away with 10 mobile phones plus nine laptops valued at an estimated N$100 000. No arrests have been made, and police investigations continue.
The inspector also reported the death of a 24-year-old man, who hanged himself with a piece of cloth at about 19:50 on Saturday in the Oshakati Police Station holding cells. The name of the deceased cannot be disclosed, as the next of kin have not been informed.
The deceased was facing three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder committed in the Zambezi Region. He was kept at the Oshakati Police holding cells to attend High Court proceedings in that town.
He did not leave any suicide note behind, and police investigations into the matter continue.
A 23-year-old man raped a 17-year-old girl on Thursday at the Onandjaba settlement in the Omusati Region. The incident happened at around 17:30.
It is alleged that the suspect found the victim walking from Onandjaba to her home village, grabbed her while threatening her with a knife and raped her.
The suspect, who is from the same village, was arrested by the police the same day, and was expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
In another incident, in Ondangwa a 29-year-old man died on the spot after being shot by a security guard on Sunday. The incident happened at about 02h20 near the Onguta Complex. It is alleged that the security guard came to the rescue of a woman who was being robbed by three men.
