Likando blasts NFA’s no show at sports awards

Home Sports Likando blasts NFA’s no show at sports awards

WINDHOEK – One of Namibia’s most decorated footballers Boston Likando, better known as Ponny Muyambango during his playing career in neighbouring Zambia, has aired his displeasure at the country’s football governing body’s (NFA) failure to submit a list of nominees for the 2014 National Sports Awards.

“I’m extremely disappointed with the NFA hierarchy. Without an iota of doubt, football is the biggest and most supported sporting discipline in our midst and for the beautiful game not to be represented at this august gathering is sickening.”

The former Chipopolo (Zambia) forward says it’s a disgrace for a country of Namibia’s stature and the NFA has no business missing out on such big events.

‘This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and should not be tolerated as it amounts to gross negligence or rather carelessness from the side of those who administer the game.”

A fuming Likando, who attended the posh gathering to receive a Lifetime Achiever Award for his valuable contribution to the beautiful game, called for stern action to be taken. “I sincerely hope and trust football bosses will launch a thorough investigation into this mess and bring the culprits to book.”

This misdemeanour follows the association’s failure to enter teams for high-profile events without any explanation.

The failure by the NFA Directorate to submit its application in time for the quadrennial Olympic qualifiers caused the National Under-23 football team to be grounded – thus missing out on playing any further part in the prestigious Olympic qualifiers.
