WINDHOEK – All roads lead to the Windhoek Country Club on Friday, 31st October when the MTC NSC Sports Awards celebrate and recognize Namibia’s sporting talents.
A total of 16 awards will be handed out on the evening, including that of Disabled Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year, while the biggest category of the night will be the Sports Achiever of the Year, which comes with whooping prize money of N$200 000, the highest it has ever been.
Last year, organisers promised to increase the prize money so that it becomes equivalent to their achievements and have this year delivered on that promise.
“Our sportsmen and women deserve good prize monies for their efforts and for making us all proud and thus we decided to double the prize money from what it was in 2013, all thanks to our partners for making this possible,” said Tim Ekandjo, Chief Human Capital & Corporate Affairs Officer of MTC, which is also the awards main sponsor.
The Disabled Sportsman and Woman recipients will each walk away with N$100 000, while the Sports Achiever takes home a handsome N$200 000.
The event will not be short of entertainment as Namibia’s Best Male and Female NAMA winners, Gazza and Ernah Chimu will both be on stage to give the audience their best performances. South Africa’s popular artist Zakes Bantwini will also make his debut performance in Namibia at the awards.
“We want to ensure that our guests are treated with the best entertainment and this is our way of growing the stature of the awards,” said Ekandjo.
For the very first time the awards will also recognize journalists in both the print and electronic media, unlike in the past when only print media journalists were recognized. “The media plays an important role in the development of sports and we can therefore not leave them behind,” says Ekandjo.
The theme for this year’s MTC NSC Sports Awards is “Creating a winning sporting Nation” and President Hifikepunye Pohamba will deliver the keynote address. Professor Joseph Diescho will also deliver a motivational speech to the various winners.
Co-sponsors of this year’s awards are Nampower, Coca Cola, FNB, Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR), Trip Travel, Windhoek Country Club and Resort (WCCR), Namibia Diamond Trading Company (NDTC), South African Airways (SAA), PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) and OTB Sports.
Tickets for the sports awards will sell for N$300 each and a table sitting 10 people is available for N$10 000. Tickets are available at all Computicket outlets at Shoprite and Checkers stores.
