OHANDJOMBALI – Work to rehabilitate the worn-out Eenhana-Okongo road has started.

Phase one of the project involves a stretch of 25km between Elundu and Eenhana and is scheduled for completion in August 2015.

According to the Councillor of Omundaungilo Constituency, Festus Ikanda, the existing road would be demolished and replaced with a new road carrying a bigger traffic volume.

The current road is full of potholes and a number of accidents have taken place on the road, attributed to the condition of the road.

“Every time the potholes are filled new ones appear because the road has a very small carrying volume. A new road will be reconstructed to standard requirements,” explained Ikanda.

The project, a joint venture between Kata Investment and China State Construction Engineering Corporation, is said to will employ more than 200 locals including women.

Phase one of the project, which started about two months ago, is expected to be completed by August 2015 to the tune of N$100 million.

Phase two will begin as soon as funds are available.

The Eenhana-Okongo road has served thousands of road users and inhabitants of Ohangwena Region.

The current road was constructed during 1997/8.

It was then extended with the Rundu-Elundu road a few years ago and ever since most road users from Oshana, Omusati, Oshikoto and Ohangwena avoid the B1 road and use the road to Kavango Region.
