Home Special Focus Upholsterer becomes a household name

WALVIS BAY – He is single-minded, industrious, enthusiastic and full of creative energy.

Walvis Bay resident and upcoming business entrepreneur, Kaulittowa Fredrick, 32, has become a household name in the upholstery industry at Kuisemond in the coastal town of Walvis Bay.

The young man who has a passion for turning old things into something modern and new, enjoys what he does and regards himself fortunate as he can sustain himself from his own handwork.

He showcases his work in front of his upholstery workshop christened Kaully’s Upholstery in Nataniel Maxuilili Street in Kuisebmond.

Friedrick started his business without any financial assistance or any formal training in upholstery except his five years experience that he gained while working at a reputable upholstery business in Windhoek, seven years ago.

He said he worked for the company for five years but decided to move back to Walvis Bay and start his own business two years ago.

“I went into partnership with someone but later on I decided to go solo, and I am thankful I did,” said the industrious youth.

Fredrick started his business in his own garage  which he still uses as a workshop and warehouse.

He told New Era he started buying padded textile covers on a small-scale and later he bought unwanted old sofas from locals which he would strip and refurbish from scratch.

“With all the money I made I bought myself a sewing machine and ventured into making tents, car and boat covers, curtains and canvasses to mention but a few,” he said.

His customers are happy with his work and some have referred their friends and family to him.

“The main thing in this industry is that you need to make sure that your clients are happy and the work that you do is of the highest quality.  That way you can ensure that your client base grows,” he said.

Fredrick wants to build a strong foundation, expand his client base, get a bank loan for future expansions as business continues to thrive.

“I currently employ four people but would like to employ more as the business grows.  I don’t only focus on re-upholstery but would like to transform old furniture into modern and classy furniture pieces,” he said.
