CALAI – The Managing Director (MD) of NamPower, Paulinus Shilamba, visited Calai in southern Angola on Thursday to sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between NamPower and Empresa Nacional De Electricidade for the Namibian utility to supply electricity to cross-border towns and settlements in southern Angola.

The two power utilities met in Menongue, Angola in February to discuss the project which will involve the upgrading of power supply to current supply points in the Cuando Cubango Province, namely in Calai, Cuangar, Dirico and Micuso as well as extension of supply to twenty settlements in the province.

It was during the second meeting held at Calai on 21 May when the project update was provided by NamPower to the provincial government and a decision was then made to go ahead with the project under an MoU, which was signed last week.

Speaking at the MoU signing ceremony Shilamba said: “We are pleased that we have fulfilled our obligations on time and are ready to proceed with the implementation of the project in phases as directed during the last meeting, till its logical conclusion.”

Shilamba assured the Angolan power utility and the Cuando Cubango Province governor that NamPower is fully committed to the principles of bilateral and economic cooperation between the two countries.

The Angolans were happy that Namibia through NamPower would assist them with electricity supply.
