RUNDU – Since many Namibians are keen to drive, young entrepreneurs like Jimmy Muronga are reaping handsome rewards in owning a driving school in Rundu to help aspiring drivers perfect the skill of being behind the wheel of a car.
“People know me and by the time they are done with my classes they will be capable of passing the driving test at NaTIS. Not only to pass the test but also to know how to behave on the road, know road rules and drive safely,” assured Muronga, who is an experienced driving instructor. Muronga started his driving school in 2010 using his uncle’s car but later when the car was involved in an accident in 2012 his venture came to a grinding halt.
“After two months of doing nothing I asked my uncle for another favour – to lend me money to buy my own car and he didn’t hesitate. So I bought a small car and since then business has been good. I also managed to pay the loan back to my uncle,” he said.
“I have gained the trust of the community and many people recommend my school. The business is registered with the Ministry of Trade and Industry and has a VAT good standing certificate,” said Muronga who is the sole owner of AK Driving School.
“ I decided to come to Jimmy’s driving school because of how people talk about him. They say he is a good instructor and I needed one after obtaining my learner’s licence. This is my eighth day and I feel ready for the yard test. I could even go for the road test today,” said Martha Likuwa, a learner driver.
But competition in town is on the up. “Rundu now has 10 driving schools and you really need to be good to get clients. We work from Monday to Saturday and I usually get more than 15 clients per week, mostly female. I see many women want to drive these days,” said Muronga.
