SOUL FOOD – No human being is an island

Home Youth Corner SOUL FOOD – No human being is an island

The saying goes “no human being is an island “, which is obvious that a person cannot exist without others.

Our lives are possible because of our families, relationships and communities we find ourselves in. Our day to day interactions with friends, relatives and strangers are what gives life a meaning. Imagine if you were alone on earth, what could you possibly look forward in a day, what will complete your day and who will you share it with. Having people around serves many purposes in life. Being part of a community fulfils a very important need of belonging. If you feel that you belong, you are able and free to share good times and bad times with those around you. In times of need, people around you assist you with materials, money, advice and offers moral support. It is vital in life to have a good support system because we are faced by many challenges daily.

We need to be grateful to the people who have helped us in life. Relationships are complex and complicated so there are always going to be faults in your relationships. But those faults should not make you a bitter person who does not appreciate what these people have done for you.
Sometimes when one reaches a certain level of success, they start looking down and forgetting the help and assistance they have received from people around them in the past. No help is little help, so be grateful everytime someone does something for you no matter how small. Start counting your blessings and the few things that are going well in your life, you will realise that they are actually plenty. You will realise how small favours from people have helped you move forward. You might not have gotten the help you wanted but remember that it could have been worse. Someone else wishes they have half of what you have. We may never have it all but if we are grateful, we will be happy.

Just as others were there for you when you needed help, it is only right to be there for others as well. Help someone out when you can, share when you have plenty. You do not just have to do good for the people you know because you have also received help from the people you do not know ( directly and indirectly ). There are so many good deeds you can do;  get involved in charities, share your food with a homeless person, open the door for somebody, and so on. Do not wait for others to do good before you do good for them. Whatever you do to other (good or bad) it will come back to you, it is called karma.

Helping others increases your confidence and gives you reasons to wake up everyday, it is a great feeling. No matter who you are, there is something that you can do that really matters. Dare yourself to be someone’s rock, do it wholeheartedly without expecting anything in return. When others do something good for you, be grateful. An ungrateful person is a poor person because they will never know when they have enough. They keep wanting more and more, hence being ungrateful comes with greediness, jealousy, stress and evil actions such as war, stealing, robbing, killing and many more. You do not wanna go there… so just be grateful.
