ONGWEDIVA – Police in Ohangwena Region have opened a case of murder against a young woman who allegedly caused the death of her baby through strangulation.

The Ohangwena Regional Police arrested 29-year-old Veronica Haleinge from Ondobe Yelao in Okongo after the police were alerted that the suspect had strangled her two-month-old infant.

According to the police public relations officer in Ohangwena Region, Abner Itumba, the suspect allegedly covered her baby’s face with her hat and tied the hat around the infant’s neck with a rope and a piece of cloth until the baby could no longer breathe.

The mother was arrested and expected to appear in the Eenhana Magistrate’s Court yesterday charged with the crime.

Police in Ohangwena also arrested a 21-year-old man from Omungwelume for allegedly stabbing another young man from the same area.

According to Itumba, the 25-year-old victim Lazarus Shikolonya died after he was stabbed with a knife at Omungwelume location.

Shikolonya was stabbed on the left side of the chest following an argument with the suspect.  The deceased’s next of kin have already been informed and police investigations continue.

The body of an 80-year-old man was found near his house at Omahenge village in Edundja in the Ohangwena Region on Tuesday. According to Itumba there was no sign of foul play.

The deceased was identified as Kamikila Alfeus.  Police investigations continue to determine the cause of death.
