WINDHOEK – Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Tuhafeni Hangula’s suspension will be lifted, after he was acquitted of fraud and other charges in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court last week.
Hangula was suspended after allegations surfaced that he falsified his Grade 12 certificate.
The deputy commissioner faced one count of academic fraud, one count of theft, a count of forgery, two counts of uttering and a count of receiving stolen property.
Commissioner-General Raphael Tuhafeni Hamunyela informed New Era on Saturday that as a result of Hangula being acquitted his suspension would be lifted.
He however could not say when Hangula would resume duty, adding that he needed to call him in and the two should agree on the commencement date. He said Hangula needs to “prepare himself physically and psychologically.”
Hangula was charged with stealing a senior certificate from the Ministry of Education on May 6, 1993, and defrauded the Department of Prisons, which then resorted under the Ministry of Home Affairs, on the same day by presenting the senior certificate as a genuine document in order to get a promotion in his rank.
After being charged, Hangula was suspended from his position with full pay, pending the outcome of the case.
