NEW YORK – President Hifikepunye Pohamba has invited United Nations’ Secretary General (SG) Ban Ki-Moon to Namibia to inaugurate the United Nations (UN) House in Windhoek. The UN House is situated in the Klein Windhoek business area, and accommodates most UN family organisations like the World Health Organisation (WHO), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

This invitation was delivered by Prime Minister Hage Geingob on Monday when he paid a courtesy call on the UN SG at the organisation’s headquarters in New York.

Speaking to Nampa immediately after the meeting, Geingob said Ban indicated that the invitation was long overdue, and he would definitely look into it.

The date of the inauguration has not been announced yet.

Geingob noted that they also discussed other issues, amongst them the UN’s reform process.

For well over a decade, there have been calls from various governments and citizens for the UN’s reform, like the expansion of the Security Council to give more balanced and equitable representation, especially regarding Africa.

Geingob said they also spoke about the Millennium Development Goals and Namibia’s development goals. The UN leader then wished Namibia peaceful democratic elections in November. – Nampa
