Student on shoe theft charge

Home Crime and Courts Student on shoe theft charge

WINDHOEK – A 24-year-old student who was caught with a pair of Adidas sneakers in his backpack denied he stole the shoes when he made a first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court.

Bonifatius Kautondokwa informed Magistrate Jermaine Muchali Muchali that he would conduct his own defence after his rights to legal representation were explained to him.

“I will defend myself as I did not commit this act,” a defiant Kautondokwa told the court. It is alleged that he stole the footwear worth N$699 from Edgars on March 02.

State prosecutor Kandiwapa Nangombe told the court the investigations were complete and asked for a postponement of the matter to June 27 for plea and trial and recommended bail of N$1 000.

However, Kautondokwa was quick to object to the bail amount and informed the magistrate he could not afford that sum. “I ask for bail reduction, N$1 000 is a lot, I am not employed, my mother is not here, I can only maybe afford N$400 or N$500,” he told Magistrate Muchali.

Prosecutor Nangombe did not object to bail of N$500 and the magistrate postponed the matter after granting Kautondokwa bail of N$500.

Muchali also informed Kautondokwa that he could obtain disclosure by making copies of the statements in the docket.
