By Petronella Sibeene WINDHOEK Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete, the President of Tanzania who last year democratically took over the reins after Benjamin Mkapa’s 10-year rule, yesterday arrived in the country for a three-day official visit. Upon touching ground from a white and sky-blue line Gulfstream 550 at Hosea Kutako International airport yesterday, the 56-year-old Kikwete was welcomed by President Hifikepunye Pohamba, Prime Minister Nahas Angula and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Marco Hausiku. Dressed in a black suit, a white and blue checked shirt and a red and white dotted tie, Kikwete was escorted to the saluting dais, whereupon the 21-gun salute, as well as the Tanzanian and Namibian national anthems followed the African Union anthem. The inspection of the guard of honour was done in a colourful display filled with symbolism, after which the national anthems were once again sung as protocol demands. The two presidents greeted different ministers, ambassadors from different embassies, the Tanzanian community in Namibia, as well as cultural groups that looked eager to meet him. As his motto reads in Kiswahili, ari mpya, kasi mpya, nguvi mpya, simply translated as new zeal and new everything, Kikwete has been described by the local Tanzanian community as a young promising and dynamic president. With the same crusade as Pohamba against corruption, just 100 days in his office the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCP) leader has been uncompromising when it comes to crushing corruption, John Nyoka, a Tanzanian residing in Namibia told New Era. “He has already set a new top class police force and tangible action has been taken against those found guilty,” stated Nyoka. At the start of his landmark visit to the country, Kikwete yesterday visited the Heroes Acre where he laid a wreath in honour of the heroes and heroines of Namibia. Today he is scheduled for official talks with State house and signing of agreements, if any. The delegation would further visit Namibia’s leading meat export company, Meatco and one of the youngest diamond cutting and polishing businesses in the country Lev Leviev Diamonds (LLD). The Tanzanian community in Namibia will this evening host President Kikwete and his delegation for dinner.
