Home Sports German boost for Okakarara Regional Football League

OKAKARARA – The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Namibia handed a donation of sports equipment to the Okakarara Regional Football League in the Otjozondjupa Region at Okakarara last Friday.

The content of the donation included football equipment such as playing gear and balls for all the twenty teams participating in the regional league. In attendance were Jana Wall from the Embassy of the Federal Republic, Regional Councillor for Otjozondjupa, Vetaruhe Kandorozu and the town’s Deputy Mayor of Okakarara, Tjiuamana Kahipura.

The regional football league was established by local footballers in conjunction with politicians from the Okakarara Constituency and the Otjozondjupa Regional Council with the ultimate aim to provide the youth with an alternative way to while away their time in order to take their focus away from alcohol and drug abuse.

More than 50 percent of the youths from this particular constituency are either unemployed or make their living by subsistence farming. The Federal Foreign Office supports the project of the German Embassy in line with its overseas sports promotion in order to help the establishment of ground-level participatory sporting activities and sports infrastructure in Namibia.

In her welcoming remarks, an excited Wall said she was very proud that the embassy is now able to assist the Okakarara Constituency office in this way. She also expressed the hope that the football league can grow its wings to attract more teams and ultimately develop strong football leagues.

“Furthermore, I hope, that other people will be encouraged to proactively engage in community development projects to help the Namibian nation to achieve Vision 2030.”

Additionally, she pointed out the long and intensive cooperation between Namibia and Germany in the area of football.

The Federal Foreign Office supports the Namibian Football Association (NFA) through long and short- term projects in the area of coaching and referee training.

In addition, the embassy regularly supports the development of Namibian ground level sports through the donation of sports equipment
