WELL-known Namibian communications personality, Nora Apollus, is to officially open an exhibition of student art on Tuesday in Katutura. According to a press release, the Product Development students at the KCAC are once again showing the excellent results of their hard work throughout the year. “This annual event should not be missed by anyone interested in the arts, and particularly those interested in the applied arts. The students have been busy designing and creating prototypes of products, which could eventually be produced in bulk and marketed to the public. The energy and vibrancy of their work are a testimony to the dedication of their three teachers: Alfrieda du Plessis, Eric Schnack and Samwell Kamati,” the statement said. A Product Development Diploma course at the Katutura Community Arts Centre takes three years to complete and teaches young people the various skills essential to follow a career in the arts. “The students study traditional art methods such as drawing, painting and sculpture as well as more specialised subjects such as jewellery, welding, sign writing and mural painting. The public can expect to find reasonably priced objects (all proceeds go to funding the materials and equipment for the course) ranging from a practical and beautiful wastepaper basket, an elaborate chandelier made from wire, to gorgeous textiles and containers for plants. Paintings, wall hangings and original jewellery created from re-cycled materials are all on display, as well as decorative objects for the home with a humorous edge,” it said. The exhibition is open Monday to Friday, 9am – 1pm and 2pm – 5pm, at the John Muafangejo Art Gallery in the KCAC, Leonard Auala Street, Katutura. Please phone Shirley the KCAC at 277300 if you need directions. For more information about the exhibition, phone Nicky at 081 273 5044.
