By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK – Culturally, Namibians say and believe that New Year’s resolutions are made and taken to soothe one’s own conscience, but eventually these solemn resolutions end up unfulfilled promises to oneself. “Why take such resolutions if you know in your soul you will not honour such resolutions to yourself in 2007? Anyway, mine will be to live a healthier life in 2007 to extend my life a little longer,” was the comment made by 75-year-old South African visitor to Namibia during the festive season, Oom Moos April from Bellville in Cape Town during a New Era street survey just after New Year’s Day The chief Public Relations officer in the ministry of Education, Toivo Mvula, was adamant about his New Year’s resolution: “I want to save more money this year than in 2006 to be able to buy myself the things I so dearly love, which includes a vehicle of my own.” Yann Hwang, the Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy in Windhoek, wants to “take life calmer and cooler in 2007”. “Last year was a very hectic one for me socially and work-wise,” he said diplomatically. “I want to reach for the stars in my theatre career in 2007. I know I can do it and I will,” said actress Nadula Hainane, who has been acting in a German-made film shot in Namibia in December last year. “I also want to improve my stage writing skills to prove I am a writer worth of notice in 2007,” the young actress promised herself. Bank insurance clerk, Helga Cupido, wants to live a more exemplary life in 2007. “I am growing up in years as an adult. I need to be a better role model for the Namibian youth. Hence this New Year’s resolution,” she said. For Dudley Lassen, health in 2007 will be his main priority. “Eating healthy foods and regular exercise is at the top of my resolution list. Mark my words, I will fulfill this long overdue undertaking to myself,” the well-known businessman said. Racehorse enthusiast Jan Strong said: “I need to start preparing for my retirement. That is why I am determined to drastically improve my financial situation in 2007.” Let’s hope all Namibians stick to the promises to themselves and honour all the resolutions they have taken until 2008.
