By Berio Mbala WINDHOEK As much as one hears about some taxi drivers who allegedly harass their customers, it turns out that they also fall prey to serious crime such as armed robbery and theft. The taxi business is among the most widely used service in the country especially by low and medium income earners. But nowadays, it seems taxi drivers are also victims of armed robbery or theft. This happens mainly while offering their service. The latest of a spate of incidents against taxi drivers happened just last week. A taxi driver Isakar Hango was shot dead by a ‘customer’ on the road to Daan Viljoen in the early evening hours of Thursday. The shooting took place at the junction between Otjomuise and Daan Viljoen road resulting in the taxi crashing into a combi on the main road to Daan Viljoen. It was reported that the taxi driver was travelling from Otjomuise with one passenger in the back seat. Hango lost control and the taxi crashed into the combi. The passenger jumped from the back of the taxi and disappeared into nearby bushes. Hango died on the scene. It was later established that he had been robbed. The police arrived on the scene later but no suspect has been arrested so far. Shortly after the incident, another incident against a taxi driver took place at Greenwell Matongo in Katutura. The police reported that a taxi driver was held at gunpoint and robbed of his white Toyota Tazz at his house at 20 Evelin Street at Greenwell Matongo settlement last week. The incident happened at around 01h00 in the morning when the taxi driver was parking his vehicle. According to Warrant-Officer James Matengu, the police are not sure whether the suspects were passengers that he was dropping off or were people who saw him parking the taxi. The registration number of the taxi was given as N3835W. The car is valued at N$67 000 and has not yet been recovered.
