By Kuvee Kangueehi WINDHOEK In order to guarantee participation of athletes in the forthcoming events such as the All Africa Games and the Olympic Games next year, the Namibia Sports Commission (NSC) has reconsidered its decision to de-register Athletics Namibia (AN). The NSC opted instead to direct AN to submit outstanding audited financial reports for the financial years 2004/05 and 2005/06 by latest July 31, 2007. The Chairperson of the NSC, Stanley Simataa, informed a media gathering that it was the Commission’s belief that the AN leadership, its constituencies and all athletes would take the ‘olive branch’ extended by the Commission and put their house in order. Simataa warned, however, that the next level of action on the part of the Commission would not be based on compassionate grounds. “We must rededicate all our resources towards the development of the abundant sporting talent in Namibia and take Namibia a step closer in terms of achieving the sporting goals as set in Vision 2030″. Simataa noted that the Commission was pleased that the AN had submitted the requested information on time – before the expiry of the due date given. The Chairperson added that at an extraordinary meeting held last week, the commission had carefully studied the information and documentation provided by AN and agreed to meet with the current and previous AN leadership. Meanwhile, Nampa reports that the Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) is eager to assist athletes financially in their preparations for the forthcoming All Africa Games. The NNOC has mobilized a Preparations Grant Programme of US$400ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 000 about (N$2.8 million) from the Olympic Solidarity to financially assist athletes who will represent Namibia at the African showpiece billed for Algiers, Algeria in July. Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, NNOC Secretary-General Abner Xoagub has urged identified sports codes of athletics, boxing, cycling, gymnastics and wrestling to furnish the national Olympic Committee with a final detailed programme on each athlete’s preparations for the All Africa Games. He said the Namibia Amateur Boxing Federation received N$54ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 000 for their training camps and the boxing tournament held at Oshakati against an Angolan invitation team. Boxing still needs to submit a progress report on each boxer, said Xoagub. He, however, was impressed with the Namibia Cycling Federation (NCF), which handed in a detailed report on cyclists’ preparations. The NCF has received N$88ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 000, which included their competition in the Giro Del Capo in Cape Town, South Africa, and will also assist with the B World Championships set for June 27 to July 4 in Cape Town.
