By Frederick Philander WINDHOEK Come wind and dust, rain, cold, heat, come all elements of the weather, but steadfast they sit and patiently wait … for an odd child sent to buy that one onion or tomato, reads a press statement from Homebrewed Productions. This is part of a one-man play, written and to be acted by Vickson Hangula next Wednesday and Thursday at the Warehouse Theatre. “We are talking about those Veggies Vendors that we see sitting at almost each and every street corner in Katutura, bracing all Mother Weather’s elements from under the shade nets of their makeshift vending stalls. As they sit there, in deep thought, waiting for somebody to buy that one tomato or for that child clutching a fifty cent piece for the chips packet, do you ever turn to think about them?”, Vickson asked in the press statement. Do you ever wonder what kind of thoughts are running through their sun-baked skulls at that moment, day in and day out? He describes Dairy of a Veggies Vendoras, a semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age account about a young boy who grows up in war-torn Namibia during the 1980s and its effects, his move to Windhoek and life in Katutura during the turbulent years leading up to independence, and the feeling of euphoria that soon turned to disappointment about what the coming of “independence” failed to deliver. “This epic tale that chronicles boys’ experiences, reliving events very memorable to boys growing up, such as being caught red-handed while thrusting away in the little urine-wet hole dug into the soft sand, the first ejaculation with a teenaged girl and about the teen gang fight years in Katutura, a trip down memory lane especially for those who grew up in the 1980s,” he said. The play is directed by Aldo Behrens.
