WINDHOEK – Investigations into the matter in which the suspended acting Secretary-General of the National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) Alfred Angula faces a charge of fraud are still incomplete.

Magistrate Conchita Olivier remanded the matter to May 8 this year for further police investigations, which she expects to be finalised by that time. Angula was granted bail of N$50 000 last year October, which was also extended to his next appearance. He faces a charge of fraud and theft involving about N$1.2 million. According to the charge sheet Angula allegedly defrauded the Namibia Farmworkers Union (NAFWU) of about N$1.2 million, which was donated to the union by a foreign donor agency.

Angula was arrested after the donor agency, Fes Belgium, laid charges of fraud and theft against him. The offence was allegedly committed between January 31, 2012 and December 31, 2012. Angula was arrested in December last year, and was denied bail during his first appearance. Only after a formal bail hearing was he eventually granted bail. Angula was the Secretary-General of NAFWU until July 2011, when he took up the position of acting Secretary-General of the NUNW, the umbrella union following the unceremonious departure of Evilastus Kaaronda.
