WINDHOEK-More than ten graduates of the College of the Arts (COTA) are exhibiting their latest Artworks at the Craft Centre starting today.

Nicky Marais, an Arts Mentor at Cota says the two-week exhibition features more than 30 pieces, of which 20 have never been publicly viewed. The selected works on paper portray a richly intimate glimpse into the artists’ evolution. “College of the Arts is extremely fortunate to host the premier of this exhibit. The exhibition will be the highlight of the college’s fall 2013 fine arts curriculum, allowing students and community members the opportunity to study up close the development of acclaimed artists,” says Marais.

The display of the artworks includes those works of pencil and ink, collages of torn paper and water colours. However, Marais says that these graduates are no longer students at the College. They have all completed their studies and working artists around Namibia now. The Name of the Exhibition is “New Beginnings 2014” and focuses on giving young graduates a chance to show the work that they have done since graduation,” says Marais.

She adds that, this is the first time for some of the students to show their own works (as opposed to work done as students at the College). “There was no theme chosen as graduates are free to choose their own subject matter. The work is done in a variety of different mediums such as paints, prints, sculptures and collages,” she says.

The Vice-Rector of the College, Angelika Schroeder, who is presently Acting-Rector, will be presented in a premier exhibit at the Centre. She will also be wishing the graduates well on their future path as artists. This is a regular exhibition organised by the College every year. This is the fifth time New Beginnings is hosted at the Centre.
