WINDHOEK– Even with the social problem that the learners of Olof Primary School in Greenwell in Katutura are facing due to the environment the school is situated in, most of them performed very well last year and they are back for another school year.
Leonard Shavuka, a Grade 7 learner, says it feels good to be back at school again, and he is ready for this year and planning to be the best. “I am happy to see my principal, teachers and friend, and most of all I am happy that I am in a new grade which I want to pass very well, as I was not happy with my Grade 6 performance” says Shavuka. He adds that he performed weak in Mathematics and Science, making those subject his target this year. “I want to pass my Grade 7 with flying point in all my subject.” he determines.
Learning more and passing with A and Bs are the only things that are in Anna Ashipala mind this year. “My teachers must expect A and Bs from me as usual,” says Ashipala. She urges other learners to work hard to pass with good grades especially the Grade 7s. “If you want to go to the school of your choice be the best and perform well,” she encourages.
For Claudia Immanuel, 2014 will be a year of change. “I want to change my performance, so I can pass all my subjects and be a good girl, do schoolwork and obey the school rules,” says Immanuel. She urges other learners to do their best in their studies and concentrate on passing their subjects.
The school principal Julia Hangula says, 2014 has started very well and will be a very successful year for the school even though there are many disturbances in the school area in terms of shebeens that are playing music during the day and in the evening. But this did not affect the performance of the learners at the school.
“Every second house in this area is a sheeben, whereby you hear the noise around the whole school. I hear the music loud and clear even when in my office it is the same as with the learners in the classrooms. However, I am proud of our learners, most of them irrespective of the difficult situation they are in they are still performing very well.”
Hangula is happy that all the teachers are back at the school and as much most of the learners.
