RUNDU – Police in the Kavango regions have warned business owners to refrain from keeping huge stashes of cash on their business premises as it poses great danger to their assets and their lives in particular.

The warning was prompted by last week’s armed robbery in Rundu where robbers stole N$400 000 from a Portuguese take-away outlet in a daring robbery. Regional Crime Investigations Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Willie Bampton, said armed robberies are rampant in Rundu and it is a serious concern for business people who keep money on their business premises, instead of using banking facilities. “By banking your money, you will avoid being a victim. Keep in mind that they [robbers] collaborate with employees who might be bribed to disclose company information to robbers,” he said.

According to Bampton poor working conditions and poor salaries are also some of the reasons why workers are easy targets for robbers. During last week’s armed robbery, it is alleged that eight suspects entered a local Portuguese take-away outlet just before closing time and held the manager and his wife at gunpoint, tied them up and fled with N$400 000 that was kept in a safe. The car in which they made their escape was later recovered a few kilometres west of Rundu. No arrests have been made so far but police investigations continue.
