Manasse denied bail in N$300 000 fraud case

Home Crime and Courts Manasse denied bail in N$300 000 fraud case

WINDHOEK – A 34-year-old woman, Milka Manasse, was denied bail in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday in connection with fraud involving over N$300 000. Namases was arrested on Tuesday.

The little information available indicate that Manasse, together with 56-year-old Martha Manasse and 39-year-old Cecilie Manasse, who were both arrested on June 26 last year, defrauded the company Congo Trading cc, a cement company. The accused allegedly ordered cement at the company and misrepresented themselves. Both Martha and Cecilie are free on bail of N$1000 each.

Manasse was not so lucky when she made her first appearance yesterday. The state represented by Verinao Kamahene, objected to her being granted bail, alleging that she has been in hiding and because she is a student in South Africa. “The accused is in custody and the state opposes bail as the Investigating Officer informed the court that when she was apprehended, she was in hiding and she is a student in South Africa, the state fears that she will abscond,” Kamahene informed the court. Manasse was however informed that she has a right to bring a formal bail application. During yesterday’s appearance, Manasse was informed of her right to apply for legal representation. She indicated that she would apply for legal aid and the matter was remanded to March 7. Magistrate Tuvoye Nuule presided.
