WINDHOEK – A shebeen on Green Mountain Road in the Goreangab settlement was robbed yesterday, but thanks to the prompt response of the Windhoek City Police everything that was stolen was recovered and two of the robbers are behind bars.
City Police Chief Abraham Kanime told reporters at a media briefing yesterday that a gang of five held shebeen workers at gunpoint just after closing hours and broke jukeboxes and gambling machines using bolt cutters.
“The suspects took three bags full of N$1 to N$10 coins and fled the crime scene in a white Toyota Corolla taxi with false registration number plate N 49445 W – R28,” he said.
Police closed off all roads in the area, which led to the arrest of two of the robbers just within hours of the crime being committed, while the other three escaped on foot, according to city police.
“Through good detective work the City of Windhoek Police arrested two of the five armed robbers, while the other three are still at large and a pistol was recovered, as well as the stolen cash.
“The hunt continues,” said Kanime.
He further used the opportunity to warn all shebeen owners to be on the lookout for suspicious looking people moving around shebeens, especially during closing hours.
“These thieves are very easy to spot, because they do not normally speak to people and they also look strange,” he said.
