Abraham embarks on global training journey

Local wrestling sensation Ester Abraham is set to embark on a transformative journey.

She departs for India tomorrow to participate in a prestigious all-female training camp, hosted by the India Wrestling Federation.

The two-week programme will see Abraham refine her skills alongside some of the best female wrestlers in the region.

She will then head to Japan for a six-week training camp, where she will train with world-class wrestlers, further honing her techniques and in preparation for future competitions.

Abraham (20) has rapidly ascended in the wrestling world.  Her impressive journey began to garner attention when she clinched her first two international gold medals in 2023 – one in mat wrestling and another in beach wrestling – along with a trophy at the Indian Ocean Competition in Mauritius in April.

Just a month later, she added a silver medal in the 59-kilogramme (kg) junior category at the African Championships in Tunisia.

Her medal-winning streak continued with a bronze at the 2023 All-Africa Games in Ghana and another bronze at the African Beach Wrestling Championship in Dakar.

Last year, her rigorous training camps in Cuba and France bolstered her prowess.

These efforts paid off handsomely, as she secured a silver medal in the 59kg category at Egypt’s African Championships in March.

Her stellar performance in 2024 earned her a nomination for the prestigious Namibia Sports Awards in the Women’s Sports Star of the Year category. Speaking ahead of her departure, Abraham, who trains at the After School Centre, expressed excitement for the upcoming opportunities.

“I’ am thrilled for this chance. I am going to grab it with both hands. I hope my journey in wrestling inspires more women to take up the sport and believe in their potential,” she said.

Abraham’s ambition does not stop with medals.

Her goal is to become the first female Namibian wrestler to qualify for the Olympics, and to be crowned an African champion.
