Government officials in the Erongo Region will be addressed on the mandate and functions of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), as part of a sensitizing workshop to be hosted by the ACC this week.
While the main aim of the workshop is to create awareness on the functions and operations of the ACC, it also hopes to solicit support from those in attendance in the fight against graft.
Councillors, members of parliament and senior public officials from the Erongo Region are expected to attend the seminar, which kicks off tomorrow.
The seminar is a continuation of a series of a nationwide anti-corruption sensitization programmes embarked upon by the ACC since the beginning of the year.
According to a press statement issued by the ACC, the commission believes the sustainable fight against corruption can easily be achieved if all stakeholder groups work together, hence the hosting of such seminars.
The ACC plans to visit all the regions and hold similar seminars with public institutions, the business communities and civil societies.
Thus far, sensitization seminars and workshops have been completed with the country’s two major tertiary institutions – the University of Namibia (Unam) and the Polytechnic of Namibia (PoN).
Other institutions that have benefited from similar initiatives include the Windhoek College of Education and the National Health Training Centre.
During March 2008, the ACC will further address members of staff and students from various other institutions including Neudamm Agricultural College and the Namibia Defence Force.
The Anti-Corruption Commission is an independent and impartial body, which was established in accordance with the Anti-Corruption Act.
The ACC receives, reviews, investigates and gathers evidence of corrupt practices, and educates the public on the role of the commission as well as foster support for the fight against corruption.
In the performance of its tasks, the ACC is obliged to cooperate with other authorities, including those of other countries.
The ACC’s press release concluded by calling on all regional councils, public institutions, civil society organizations, the business community and citizens to join the fight against corruption.
Erongo Regional Governor, Samuel Nuuyoma and the Director of the Anti-Corruption Commission, Paulus Noa will officiate at the event.
