Adult Learners’ Week, which has the theme ‘Literacy, the foundation for sustainable societies’, was officially launched by Zambezi Regional Governor Lawrence Sampofu on Monday.

Adult Learners’ Week, formerly known as Literacy Week, is an annual event meant to promote lifelong learning and a platform to raise the importance of literacy specifically among adults.

Sampofu said that even though the region has seen a drastic increase in the number of adult learners, more is supposed to be done to include all members of society in the mainstream economy.

“In the Zambezi Region the Directorate of Adult Education has eight literacy districts in all constituencies with more than 100 literacy promoters and over 1 000 adult learners. Though this is a promising number, more still needs to be done to include members of society still illiterate to participate actively in nation building,” said Sampofu.

On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. The main celebration of Adult Learners’ Week, which forms part of the international literacy day observed worldwide on the 8th of September each year, will take place at Schuckmannsburg near Kabbe.
