WINDHOEK – The Archery Association of Namibia (AAN) is to host its annual Independence Shoot competition at the SKW archery range in Windhoek this weekend.

A total of 18 archers have confirmed their participation in this prestigious event and as usual, the compound and recurve shooters will battle it out in 10 different age categories.

The tourney is set to stretch over two and a half days and gets underway tomorrow afternoon with all participants given an opportunity to test their bows and arrows during the official training day. Friday sees archers go head-to-head in the single FINA round where each participant stands to gain a maximum of 1440 points over a single round that is sub-divided into four different distances.

Activities end on Saturday with the grand-finale, which consists of an Olympic round, the elimination round and the medal matches. This will be one of the last opportunities for Namibia’s leading archers to prepare for upcoming international events. Meanwhile, a 19-member delegation will head to Johannesburg to participate in the 64th 6-day South African National Archery Championships slated for March 29. Special focus will be on the quartet of Francois Marais, Ruan van Staden, Louw Nel and Lesley Page, who are traveling to Antalya, Turkey to compete in the World Cup during the period June 10-15. 2014.

This weekend’s Independence Shoot presents an ideal opportunity for the archers to prepare themselves for the Federation of African Archery (FAA) Championship in Windhoek next month, notably those who are still in the running to qualify for the Junior Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
