The second edition of the Athletics Namibia Leg 8 Grand Prix Open Championship is taking place today at Gobabis’ Legare Stadium in the Omaheke region.
In an interview with New Era Sport, Zelda Katjingisiua, who is the secretary of the Omaheke Athletic Committee, indicated that the purpose of the competition is to scout talented athletes who are not given the opportunity to show their talents in Windhoek competitions.
“This is the second time our region is hosting such an event of such magnitude; initially, it was primarily aimed at showcasing senior athletes but with the eye of development, we included youth especially school-going children from under 11 to 19 years age groups,” elaborated Katjingisiua.
She added that most athletic clubs in Omaheke will be represented in the competition.
“As a host, we will have athletes from Otjinene, Epukiro, Aminuis and various schools in the region that are coming to Gobabis,” she added.
Otjozondjupa region’s Phoenix and Okaondeka Athletic Clubs have confirmed their participation at the event, whereas Rehoboth and Mariental Athletic clubs from the Hardap region are already in the cattle country.
Katjingisiua further added that Swakop Strides from the Erongo region, as well as Windhoek-based Unam Athletic Club, will be competing in this championship.
There will be medals for winners in senior categories in various track field events, she said.
“Unfortunately, we do not have many awards for the junior category due to the lack of sponsorships,” emphasised Katjingisiua.
According to Katjingisiua, athletes in the region are discriminated against in terms of sponsorship, compared to other sports codes.
“This is a dilemma, thanks to Athletics Namibia for availing N$5 000 for this championship; we are facing difficulties as Athletic Omaheke. Some of our kids do not have running shoes and other athletics gear,” she highlighted.
She called on the business community in the region to come on board and contribute to the development of athletics.
“Big companies should not wait for children to shine. They must start early while at a tender age and sponsor them,” urged Katjingisiua.
Confirming to this agency, Okaondeka’s head of delegation Justice Kavari said about 50 athletes from his club will participate in the Gobabis competition.
“Our team is ready; we are fresh from Mariental’s Leg 7 Championship, where we did a tremendous job. We have no injuries, and we will be facing our opponents with our heads high and aiming for 30 medals from this competition,” said Kavari.
Otjinene’s Kazatjo Kambiri, who represented Namibia at the recent Zambia’s under 18 youth championship, will be at the event to motivate other athletes.
The event is expected to end on Saturday afternoon.
