Kavango West Regional Governor Sirkka Ausiku has heaped praise on government for responding to her perpetual calls to bring services to the region – the newest in the country. Ausiku made the remarks during the official opening of the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) fish shop in Nkurenkuru on Thursday.

“I’m humbled and very happy to see that our government is responding to our calls. Just recently the minister of works and transport was here and brought services to our community by opening a NaTIS office and now today we are here with the minister of fisheries and marine resources to open another important service to us, that is the NFCPT Fish Shop in Nkurenkuru. We’re thankful,” she said.

“I’ve been trying to make our message heard that we are a new region, the last-born that needs to be treated special and I think you can agree with me that our call is being answered,” the governor told those in attendance.
Ausiku urged the locals to make use of the fish shop by buying in bulk and selling to those that are not in close proximity to the shop.

Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Bernard Esau officiated at the opening of the shop and said Namibia can only achieve the targets set out in the Harambee Prosperity Plan if the needs of the people at grassroots levels are addressed as a matter of priority.

“Indeed, policies don’t put food on the table of our people.
“Hunger will not be eradicated through speeches alone, but through initiatives like this one where we remain focused on ensuring equitable food distribution,” Esau said.

He further said with the setting up of the fish shop NFCPT has not only brought fish to the community of Kavango West, but is also assisting government in reducing unemployment.

“I’m informed that the shop has a staff complement of five people: the branch administrator, a cashier, two fish processors and a cleaner. These young people are all from this region,” he noted.

The Nkurenkuru Fish Shop marks the latest addition to NFCPTs already existing impressive retail footprint, as it is now present in 12 of the 14 regions.

NFCPT aims to extend its otulets to the remaining regions of Zambezi and Otjozondjupa Regions within this financial year.
