By Fifi Rhodes WINDHOEK A newborn baby was found dead in a trash bin behind Kentucky Fried Chicken in Windhoek’s Tal Street on Monday. A homeless person scavenging for food on his regular rounds came to a halt in Tal Street behind Kentucky Fried Chicken as he opened the bin and discovered to his horror that his “luck” was a baby’s corpse wrapped in an Ackerman’s plastic bag. Bartholomew Draghoender who sleeps under the Wernhil bridge told New Era that he was at the same bin on Sunday afternoon around 16h00. Shaking with shock and disgust, he said before he reached the same bin around mid-day on Sunday, he had managed only to collect four cool-drink bottles. As he opened the already full bin’s lid, putting his hand in, he first thought he may have struck “luck” with a barrel of fried chicken but to his shock “the feet and hands” made him realize that his find was a lifeless body of a baby. He dashed in pain and fright to call a City Police officer who was close by to inform him about his gruesome find. It could not be immediately determined whether the baby died before or after birth and if it was a boy or girl. A medical examination is pending, and police are trying to identify the child’s mother by asking the help of the public who might know any person that was due to give birth around that time but does not have a baby anymore. “At this time, it certainly does not look promising,” a police officer said of the search for the parent, noting that it will be difficult to determine which part of the town the mother might be residing in.
