WINDHOEK –The Namibia Genetics Auction on August 20 and 22 will again be sponsored by Bank Windhoek and the upcoming event promises to be bigger and better with some of the best animals from 13 breeds represented by 29 breeders from around the country on offer over two days.
On August 20, more than 100 bulls will be auctioned and on August 22 more than 200 cows and heifers will go under the hammer. In the past, various stud animal auctions took place under the Genetics brand but this year breeders from the Namibia Genetics Group and the Superior Genetics Group decided to combine their efforts and will offer some of their best animals under the brand of Namibia Genetics. “As breeders buy four or more bulls per year, we decided to make it more convenient for them by offering a larger variety top genetic material from the different breeds. Potential buyers will also not have to drive to more than one auction to get breeding material and this will save them both time and money,” says Gielie Vermeulen, spokesperson for the breeders. “In the end we aim to have stud animals from all the different breeds found in Namibia at the Namibia Genetics Auction,” Vermeulen says. He adds that the animals presented at the auction will undergo a stringent selection process before they will are added to the catalogue.
“At Bank Windhoek we realise that one of the most important decisions a cattle farmer needs to make, is the selection of a bull for his herd. Careful consideration also needs to be given to finding the right female animals, as this choice will influence the herd for many years to come. We believe that some of the best available genetic material in Namibia will be on auction at the Namibia Genetic Auction and therefore Bank Windhoek again decided to support the farmers of Namibia through supporting this auction,” says Riaan van Rooyen, Head of Corporate Communication and Social Investment at Bank Windhoek.
“Agriculture is the backbone of a healthy and well-fed nation. Therefore Bank Windhoek believes in supporting farmers, and in doing so, supporting the Namibian nation. A hungry nation can never reach its full potential,” van Rooyen says.
The breeds on auction at the Namibia Genetics Auction are Brangus, Brahman, Braunvieh, Simmentaler, Simbra, Limousin, Hereford, Santa Gertrudis, Charolais, Beefmaster, Braford, Nguni and Sussex.
