Bible teachings on marriages and divorce

Home Archived Bible teachings on marriages and divorce

This letter follows Mondays’ programme on Channel 7 radio and Pastor Alex’s full gospel preaching on NBC national radio service on 19 January 2014. The preaching had to do with the Bible’s teachings on marriages and divorce.

I totally agree with the above preachers that marriage is an institution of God, and what God has put together no one should separate.  It is very clear only what God has put together, referring to covenant marriages, not what a man out of lust, through witchdoctors, marrying without asking God, and other means that is not of God neither the will of God. We need discernment to know the will of God for us to follow it, please read Gal. 5:16-17. What is disappointing though, the preachers kept telling this nation that, if you are divorced and have married again, then you should go back to the former, irrespective of what type of marriage it was. These preachers say that anything that has gone through the altar is God’s marriage. The preachers do not reveal that even with covenant marriages there is an exception, and this exception is stated in Mat: 19:9 and Mat 5:32. Please read Deut 24:1-4 LAWS CONCERNING DIVORCE “…then a former, who sent her away, may not take her again to be his wife, after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before the Lord. You shall not bring sin upon the land that the Lord Your God is giving you for an inheritance.” What you keep telling people of God is against the Bible, as per Deut 24:1-4. What the preachers miss is that marriage is a covenant that only God can make and we all have this covenant with God from birth not with witchdoctors, evil spirits, seduction and lust. A marriage that is not a covenant marriage will never be a marriage of God and children born out of that will not be the children of the promise. Read Rom 9:6-29 to understand God’s sovereign choice, soul mates are chosen by God himself even before they are born, Rom 9:11. The scandalous/drama marriages, as one of the Catholic priests referred to them, are not marriages and leaving that marriage is not divorcing just like the Catholic priest put it in one of the programmes with Mapeni on NBC national radio. He explained how Catholics try by all means to make sure only covenant marriages are [legitimate]. Lutheran churches also dissolve marriages after elders sit to scrutinize the circumstances and the grounds for divorce. Although called divorce I think some are the same as the Catholic priest was referring to, which is in accordance with the bible. The only weakness Lutherans have is strictness in preparing people to ensure only covenant marriages are [legitimised]. Marriage Law, remember there is a law given to Moses for reasons stated in the bible before Christ, please read John 1:17. ”For the law was given to Moses, grace and truth came through Jesus Christ and Gal 5:2-6, and when Christ came, He brought Grace with to set us free, read John 1:16.”

“For from His fullness we have all received, Grace upon Grace” and Gal 5:1-26,”CHRIST HAS SET US FREE” but we must “KEEP IN STEP WITH THE SPIRIT.” Verse 16: But I say, walk by the spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. V17. For the Desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the Flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you doing the things you want to do. V18. But If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.” that is why Roms 7: 1-6 “RELEASED FROM THE LAW” clarifies this point.

The problem is that the preachers only read Romans 7:1-3 and not 4-6 to understand it well. Rom 7:4-6 “Likewise my brothers, you also have died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you may belong to another, to Him who has been raised from the dead, in order that we may bear fruit for God. Verse 5: For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions aroused by the law, were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. Verse 6: But now we are released from the law, having died to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the spirit and not in the old way of the written code.”

What we need to teach the people of God is how to make sure they are getting into covenant marriages and not worldly marriages. This can only be done by praying to God for wisdom, understanding and the Spirit of Discernment, to show them who their Soul Mates are and recognise them when they come, this will lead to the fulfilment of Rom 9 God’s sovereign choices especially verses 6-29. This will help the people of God that only covenant marriages exist which God Himself keep bound for His own Glory and their children will be the light and Salt of the world, See Rom. 9:29. Most people are warned spiritually before getting into worldly marriages, but because of spiritual blindness they go against God’s will. The preachers also tell the people of God that, “every person who has divorced will not enter the Kingdom of God.” Yes, breaking a covenant marriage and remarrying maybe a sin, so is going to witchdoctors to control people with evil spirits into marriages, being a witch, wizard, marrying due to lust, marrying on your own will without asking God, sex before marriage, drunkenness, sex by married person with another person rather than wife or husband, stealing, lies, gossip, slander, envy, jealousy and others, there is no small sin or big sin, and we are all sinners just read John 8:7.

Let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” Luke 12:2 “Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed, or hidden that will not be known,” but the good news is that Jesus died for our sins. Please do not confuse God’s people to miss his Mercy and Grace, for this I suggest you read Mat:12:31: “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven,” only blaspheming the Spirit sin is not forgiven, otherwise all sins can be forgiven.
