By Surihe Gaomas WINDHOEK Five South Africans and two Namibian nationals found themselves behind bars on Sunday night as Police made their biggest cannabis bust. The eighth person died after being shot in the chest whilst trying to escape. The cannabis, or dagga, weighing 162 kilograms and having a street value of N$486ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 000, was found in a truck from South Africa between Windhoek and Okahandja after the Police stopped and searched the vehicle. When one of the occupants tried to escape, the police fired warning shots at first but, after the suspect failed to surrender, he was shot in the chest . He later succumbed in the Katutura State Hospital. The deceased was identified as 30-year-old Abner Mathias. The South Africans were identified as Mario Ben Ndlovu (53) the truck driver; Fezeka Kunyuza (41); Ncebakazi Tokota (38); Tobeka Mandolo (39); Bonga Mandolo (23). The Namibians were identified as Nahale Fillemon (29) and Hendrick Gariseb (22). The two Namibians were granted bail of N$5ÃÆ’Æ‘ÀÃ…ÃÆ”šÃ‚ 000 each, while the South Africans will remain in police custody. The Complaints and Discipline Department of the Namibian Police opened a murder docket in relation to the death of Abner Mathias. Police investigations into the case continue.
