OTJIWARONGO – A carcass of a female black rhino was discovered with a bullet wound in the stomach, on 18 August 2023 at a waterhole inside a game farm in the Grootfontein district of the Otjozondjupa region.
According to the Namibian Police head of community affairs in the region, Maureen Mbeha, in an interview with Nampa on Thursday, workers at the farm made the discovery.
“However both its horns were found intact,” she said.
Police’s preliminary investigations on the carcass revealed that the animal was shot and injured by an unknown poacher on the farm, and on Friday last week, the rhino succumbed to the injury at one of the waterholes in the farm, she said.
A bullet head was also retrieved from the stomach of the animal by the police, said Mbeha.
“No suspect has been arrested at this stage in connection with the matter,” she said.
