Boxing championship to ignite Grootfontein

Boxing championship to ignite Grootfontein

The elite men and women National Boxing Championship is set to take place this weekend in Grootfontein, bringing together top talent from across Namibia.

Israel Hamutumbangela, a representative from the Namibia Boxing Federation and one of the event’s organisers, said 14 regions will be represented at the tournament, along with a combined team from the Namibian Defence Force, Nampol, and the Correctional Service.

These participants are vying for a chance to qualify for the prestigious African Boxing Championship, scheduled to take place from 14 to 27 October in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Hamutumbangela emphasised the significance of this year’s nationals, stating that all logistical arrangements, including transport, accommodation, food and equipment have been carefully organised. “This year’s national championship will be the best ever because boxers are eager to be in the national team,” he said. Each region is expected to field 13 men and 12 women boxers, following the weight categories established by the International Boxing Association. The championship is anticipated to deliver thrilling action, as fighters from every corner of Namibia aim to secure spots on the national squad. The head coach of the Khomas Regional team, Titus Joseph, expressed confidence in his team’s preparation and enthusiasm. “My team is ready for the competition and eager to show off their skills,” he said, underlining the high level of competition expected this weekend. With the African Boxing Championship in Kinshasa serving as the next milestone, the national event in Grootfontein promises to be a battleground where Namibia’s finest boxers can make their mark. -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
