The Youth Brickmaking Project was launched in Walvis Bay late last month, and aims to create employment opportunities for the youth.
This initiative is spearheaded by the African Councillors Social Development Association (ACSDA).
Erongo governor Neville Andre said the ACSDA deserved recognition because by providing young people with the skills and resources needed to produce bricks, they are not only equipping them with a means to earn a livelihood, but also instilling in them a sense of purpose and pride.
“As the forefront of the government’s development agenda are youth development and empowerment issues, investment in youth will enhance their health, education, social welfare and opportunities for economic empowerment,” he said.
Andre said the project is a significant milestone in their collective efforts to combat unemployment and poverty, particularly among the youth of Walvis Bay.
Moreover, he said the Brickmaking Project is more than just an economic venture; it is a symbol of commitment to creating sustainable employment opportunities and fostering socio-economic development.
“The bricks they produce will be used to build homes, schools and other essential infrastructure, thereby contributing to the overall development of our region and Namibia at large,” said the governor.
Meanwhile, Social Security Commission chief executive officer Milka Mungunda said the project represents a bold step towards empowering the youth, fostering entrepreneurial spirit and contributing to the socio-economic development of the country.
“The commission’s allocation of funds (N$2 400 000) to establish this enterprise underscores our unwavering commitment to supporting sustainable development initiatives that provide tangible benefits to our communities.
We witness the fruition of a vision aimed at creating opportunities, enhancing skills and building a brighter future for our young people,” she said.
Mungunda said the project has been a success as 10 young people have been employed, and 1000 bricks are produced daily.
“Together, we are building more than just bricks; we are building a brighter future for our youth and our community,” Andre said.
