Northern amateur light heavyweight rookie boxer Hedison Haufiku burst into boxing after he bruised Angolan opponent Vardo Portasion inside the distance of their four-round non-title bout at the Ekamuti Lodge in Ondangwa, last weekend.

The Smart Boxing Bonanza attracted the finest boxers from that neck of the woods – featuring eight national undercard bouts.

Popularly known as Bulelo in boxing circles, Haufiku was in mean mood from the onset as he taught his more experienced counterpart a few boxing lessons – unleashing a string of well-timed uppercuts and accurate jabs.

The Namibian boxer went on the rampage in the second round – peppering his opponent with a combination of punches that left the clearly out of sorts Angolan dizzy.

As the round progressed, Bulelo became incensed climbing into his opponent with intent to cause serious bodily harm, but the referee had seen enough and justifiably abbreviated the contest midway through the second round – much to the delight of the enthusiastic crowd.

The multi-talented Haufiku, a bodybuilding champion, walked away with a trophy and a gold medal in his debut bout after entering the dog eat dog business of leather trading less than a month ago.

However, his victim’s corner is having none of that and has requested a rematch at a yet to be decided venue and date.

Prior to the fight, Portasion boasted an impressive record of five wins and one draw in his short boxing career.

A clearly delighted Haufiku was upbeat after his victory saying this is just the beginning of good things to come. He confirmed his immediate wish to join the paying ranks (turning professional) after the rematch against his maiden casualty.

“This was just a stepping stone towards my aspirations for future professional bouts because I’m ready to take my boxing career to the next level after the rematch,” he bragged.
The bodybuilding guru is no stranger to winning
, as he scooped the prestigious trophy for the Regional Bodybuilding Championship in Ongwediva in 2013.

Last year, he claimed the middleweight crown at the National Championships in Windhoek. As if this was not enough, he added the Ondangwa Fitness Bodybuilding golden belt to his horde of accolades in October last year while he ended third in the G-Classics Bodybuilding Championship held last November.

The Smart Boxing Bonanza was sponsored by Mediva Fisheries with a handsome amount of N$30 000 covering all the logistics.
