It will be an action-packed weekend for Namibian rugby as the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias continue with their desperate bid for a first Currie Cup victory when they take on South African provincial outfit SWD Eagles, tomorrow at the Hage Geingob Stadium in Windhoek at 16:00.
Namibia is still in search of a first Currie Cup victory, having lost nine straight games so far, with the latest being a 66-5 disheartening defeat against the Falcons in Kempton Park, South Africa. This weekend presents yet another opportunity for the Windhoek Draught Welwitschias to try and dust themselves off by hopefully beating the visiting Falcons.
The Windhoek Draught Welwitschias squad currently participating in the ongoing Currie Cup consists mostly of home-based players, who are all competing and being exposed at that level for the first time.
Meanwhile, another squad of the Welwitschias, consisting of international players, is also hard at work in Romania competing in the 11th edition of the IRB Nations Cup in Bucharest. After losing their opening fixture against host nation Romania by 8-20, Namibia responded strongly in their second match against Spain on Monday – beating the Spaniards by 34-32.
But it’s still a job far from done as they now face a daunting task when they confront Italy tomorrow for their third Nations Cup clash at Stadium Arcul de Triumf in Bucharest, where they will be expected to pick up where they left off in their match against Spain and close off with a comprehensive victory.
