Namibia has submitted the draft National Report for Namibia’s 2026 submission to the United Nations Universal Periodic Review (UPR) working group.

The UPR is a mechanism led by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) under the UN Human Rights Council. 

It reviews the human rights records of all 193 UN Member States every four and a half years.

Agreement between Namibia and Malta 

Cabinet also approved the signing of an agreement between Namibia and Malta on cooperation in research and innovation.

“The agreement establishes a legal framework and institutional mechanisms to promote mutual cooperation and shared benefits in research and innovation,” reads a Cabinet resolution. 

Scholarship programme 

Furthermore, Cabinet approved the signing of an agreement between Namibia’s Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sports, Arts and Culture and Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The agreement relates to cooperation under the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme (2026-2028) through which Hungary will offer up to ten scholarships per year to Namibian students.

NWR financial performance

Cabinet directed the ministry responsible for tourism to table a report with a clear audit opinion in the National Assembly.

NWR’s revenue increased from N$387.0 million in 2023 to N$448.8 million in 2024, representing a growth of 16%.

The Cabinet decisions were derived from Cabinet meetings that took place on 17 and 24 February, respectively. The next Cabinet meeting will take place on 3 March. akaure@nepc.com.na
