A 46-year-old driver died on the spot when he lost control of his vehicle, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and overturn on a slope on Saturday evening near Etosha.
This was one of three accidents that took place over the weekend in Oshikoto Region, involving at least 13 people of whom 12 sustained serious to minor injuries.
The driver of a Toyota Land Cruiser, identified as Simon Shipena, was travelling with five members of his family aged between 30 and 48, when he lost control.
Shipena died on the spot while his family members sustained serious to minor injuries. The passengers were all transported to Tsumeb Hospital.
According to the Crime Coordinator of Oshikoto Region, Deputy Commissioner Naomi Katjiua, the occupants are from Farm Omupalala, Oshivelo area.
The police were only informed on Sunday as there is no cellphone coverage in the area. A case of culpable homicide has been opened.
In a separate car accident, an unlicensed 46-year-old driver sustained a fractured leg while his two passengers sustained slight to serious injuries in a head-on collision at Omuthiya Town. The incident took place around 20h50 last Saturday.
It was reported that a Toyota Corolla collided head on with a Totota pick-up, driven by a 50-year-old driver. The driver of the pick-up who was the only occupant in his vehicle sustained head injuries.
The victims were then transported to Omuthiya State Hospital.
Also in Oshikoto Region, a case of reckless and negligent driving was opened against a 36-year-old man on Sunday.
The driver was transporting two passengers, 23-year-old Paulina Tjakanavi and her two-year-old daughter, when he lost control of his vehicle.
It allegedly swerved and overturned, hitting a nearby tree. The accident occurred at 11h00 some 16 kilometres to Oshivelo.
“The driver and the child sustained injuries, however they are in stable conditions,” said Katjiua.
Katjiua said Tjakanavi sustained head injuries. The victims were transported to Omuthiya State Hospital where Tjakanavi was later transferred to Oshakati State Hospital.
