Hundreds of learners from high schools in Khomas, Hardap and Omaheke regions, including school dropouts were among those who gathered at the Habitat Research and Development (HRDC) on Saturday to learn more about science and technology and to plan for their future careers.
Among those who attended the career fair, known as Ritja and which has become an annual event, included learners from the Namibia College of Open Learning (Namcol). This year the Ritja Career Fair was hosted under the theme, Education in Science and Technology advance real world. The fruitful career fair also inspired many school dropouts who had a productive day at the HRDC, trying to figure out and understand which path to follow in life after being motivated, especially when it comes to science and technology nowadays. “This career fair gave a boost in my life to even start with my solar power business that I always wanted to develop. Science and technology provide young people with the knowledge and tools to understand and address many of the challenges. Hence it is up to us, to provide opportunities to access, understand, and evaluate current information and tools related to science and technology,” says Timoteus Markus, one of the school dropouts who is willing to starts his solar business.
Ndahambelela Sheya, currently improving her Grade 10 at Namcol, says if she passes her Grade 10 next year, she will chose a field of study with Science so she become a pilot in the future. “Although I did not make it last year and I am still improving my Grade 10 results, if I pass I would love to study Science and Technology,” she says.
The fair was sponsored by Erongo Red, Hollard Insurance, Namcol, MVA Fund, Parliament, Nampol, University of Namibia and the Polytechnic of Namibia.
