On Saturday, government announced that Namibia has recorded her first cases of the deadly coronavirus after a couple from Romania who arrived in the country on Wednesday both tested positive and have been quarantined.

The outbreak of the deadly coronavirus, which has infected more than 132,000 people globally and spread to at least 120 countries worldwide, has also severely crippled sporting events in Namibia. The pandemic is officially known as Covid-19.

Everywhere in the global sphere, countries, people and women are celebrating women’s month. The month of March signifies how far women have come from the days of not being allowed to cast votes or partake in sport events. 

Namibia’s undefeated featherweight boxer Sakaria ‘Desert Storm’ Lukas will tomorrow make his much-anticipated American debut at New York’s Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden when he confronts America’s Jessie Magdaleno in what is expected to be a thrilling 10-round featherweight bout.

Hi everyone, welcome to another instalment of my weekly column Ryan’s Corner. The world over, sport is faced with one of the biggest and scariest challenges called the coronavirus.

Just less than a year ago, local golfing sensation Likius “Puyol” Nande, was hailed as the best thing that could have happened to Namibian sport after the legendary Frank Fredericks.

World Boxing Organization (WBO) Global junior lightweight champion, Jeremiah Nakathila, who was initially scheduled to fight South Africa’s Rofhiwa Maemu in the Independence Boxing Bonanza later this month, will now face a new opponent.

Chairperson of the Junior Tennis Committee of the Namibia Tennis Association (NTA), Santie van der Walt, has expressed satisfaction with the growth of tennis in the country after the successful hosting of two well-attended tournaments at Swakopmund and Windhoek recently. Speaking to New Era Sport yesterday, Van der Walt said tennis in Namibia has over the past years grown and many people are now starting to take tennis seriously as a career, especially the youth.

Career achievements: I have a few from netball, hockey and athletics but since I’m full-time playing hockey, I would say my biggest achievement is playing professional hockey in Holland. I became the first Namibian to ever play high-level hockey.
