ONGWEDIVA – Two children, Johannes Theodis (4) and Gustav Uunona (2) burnt to death in their grandmother’s hut on Tuesday around 10h00 at Onyaadhila a village near Ongwediva.
The children were apparently in the house alone with their grandfather when the fire started. The cause of the fire is unknown, but the family suspects that the children were playing with a box of matches, which is suspected to have caused the fire.
By the time the neighbours arrived to put out the fire, the hut had already collapsed with the children trapped inside. The mother of one of the deceased children told New Era that nothing was recovered from the hut and that some national documents were also lost in the fire. The bodies of the children were taken to the Oshakati mortuary by the police.
