The opening match of this year’s FNB Classic Netball Clashes kicked off last weekend in Windhoek, with hosts Eldorado Secondary School tasting defeat at the hands of the visiting St Josephs (Dobra) Secondary School, going down by 13 baskets to 33.

The visitors looked strong from the first whistle and it came as no surprise when they got their name registered on the scoreboard. Leading goal shooter Vicky Gure had little trouble in rattling the opposition’s hoop at will in the first quarter.

It was the first time in two years that St Josephs have beaten their old foes rivals,” said a dejected Eldorado team manager, Andjamba. “It was one of the biggest defeats in our history and also in the history of schools netball of the Classic Clashes,” she added.

The Vigo Hero of the Day was Lenita Dickson from Eldorado Secondary School. She is not only the headgirl, but also excels in academics. FNB Classic Clash Women of the match was St Joseph’s Dobra Goalkeeper Katjiuanjo Kauerike.

The next matches will be played later today between Augustineum and Academia high schools, while Saturday sees the first football sides of St George’s and St Paul’s confront each other in what promises to be humdinger. Jan Mohr and Delta also cross swords in Saturday’s other action.

“Everyone is welcome to attend these clashes and we hope to see more support from the parents, friends and acquaintances. It is great to see these youngsters in action, as we look forward to a funfilled 2016 season”, said FNB’s corporate social responsibilty manager Revonia Kahivere.

FNB Namibia has been an ardent supporter of Netball Namibia (NN) over a number of years and the financial institution was present and visible at last weekend’s matches to ensure that all the new rules are adhered to. In the end fair play prevailed.
