WINDHOEK – Coca Cola Namibia yesterday once again reaffirmed its commitment towards sports development
when it sponsored the Namibia Paralympics Committee (NPC) with N$70 000 to host the 3rd edition of its national
Paralympics Championship.
The Championship is slated for the Windhoek Independence Stadium from Friday until Saturday. The event, which was officially incepted in 2011, is expected to feature the country’s crème de la crème para athletes such Johannes Nambala, Ananias Shikongo,
Lahja Ishitile and youngster Johanna Katjikuru, amongst many other upcoming athletes from various parts of the country.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Windhoek yesterday, Coca Cola Sponsorship Manager, Gordon Pokolo said they are proud of the achievements and developments at NPC and equally impressed with the overall performance of Para athletes.
“We at Coca Cola believe that there is still hidden talent in many remote areas of Namibia that needs to be identified, that why we have decided to back this weekend’s championship because it will serve as a perfect platform for the youngsters to come showcase their talents,” said Pokolo.
Last year, the event attracted more than 150 athletes but organisers have this year decided to reduce the number of participants to at least 100, in order to provide more competition for the upcoming athletes.
The reduction in the number of participants is also aimed at giving scouts enough room to scout top athletes to represent Namibia at upcoming international events, such as the 2016 Olympics and the 2015 World Championship in Doha, Qatar.
