Coetzee conquers historic ultra race across SA

Ultra-endurance cyclist Drikus Coetzee etched his name into the record books after winning the inaugural Race Across South Africa, a gruelling   2 000km event, in an impressive time of seven days, 12 hours and 3 minutes.

The victory not only secured him top honours but also set the benchmark for what promises to become a major fixture on the global ultra-endurance racing calendar.

Reflecting on the demanding journey, Coetzee described the race as both breathtaking and brutal.

“It was the most beautiful route I have ever ridden, but it’s a beast of a race,” he said.

The Namibian star highlighted the extreme conditions riders faced throughout the event, including cold, wet and muddy terrain, coupled with strong winds and even stormy weather in certain sections.

“It was a spectacular route, but extremely challenging. At times it was cold, wet, muddy and very windy. I also had some problems in the mud, but overall, I am satisfied with my performance,” he added.

Despite his dominant win, Coetzee admitted he did not push at full capacity and believes there is still more to come.

“I didn’t race full out. I think this season I will be faster,” he said, while also hinting that he may not return to defend his title as he looks to explore new ultra-endurance challenges.

His next target is the demanding Rhino Run, set to start in Windhoek in October. The race will cover an even longer distance of 3 050km, stretching south to Graaff-Reinet.

Known as the “Diesel Engine” in endurance circles, Coetzee explained that his strength lies in long-distance racing.

“When the road gets long, that’s where I excel. I enjoy the ultra stuff – it’s about conquering the challenge. I prefer the longer races that truly test your endurance,” he said.

He also expressed hope that his latest achievement will inspire aspiring athletes back home in Namibia.

“I hope this victory inspires many young athletes. I am receiving massive support from home, and that carries me through. I’m also grateful to my sponsors for giving me the opportunity to compete in races like these,” he concluded.
